What is 'Babylon'? Babylon 2022 Film Review, starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo & Toby Maguire

Babylon 2022  Nowadays there are only several films that hook me up to the end. And Babylon is one of them.    Now I don't know why Babylon didn't perform at the so-called box office so much and became a flop. But in my opinion, it is a love letter to the cinema, a dedicated appreciation, a celebration.   Based on primarily four characters who are in show business at different levels, Babylon is one of those films that will stand out in the test of time and eventually, hopefully, will become a cult classic.   With its incredible and enormous cast, Babylon sheds light on the bizarre lives of stars and wannabe stars in the town of Bel-Air. And their transformation through the transition from the silent era to the sound era.   Now that we are talking about casting. Let's talk about the incredibly talented cast with exceptional performances. Brad Pitt as Jack Conrad, loosely based on John Wilbert, a silent film...

Haddi 2023 Movie Review and Disappointments

An educated transgender woman goes on a killing spree in the fullest carnage mode after a politician kills her whole family brutally. That's what I thought I'd be witnessing in the film Haddi.   Sadly that wasn't the case. As much as I liked the trailer, the film was a total disappointment for me. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a brutal bloodthirsty transgender woman seeking her revenge was good enough to hook me in.  But the making made a total letdown. The non-linear storyline was confusing and incomplete. Lead's performances were good enough but some sides were huge misfits. Although I liked the chemistry between Nawaz and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, but felt like they could have been better. Anurag Kashyap as a cold and goofy politician was convincing enough.  And after everything what really disappointed me that the fact that the greatness this film could have achieved with a little bit more mature making. They try to hide the necessary violent shots...

Gaman (1978) Film Appriciation

Gaman 1978  If one has to understand the pain of separation and helplessness, Gaman is the movie for you. Gaman is one of the most visually impactful Hindi cinema.  Director Muzaffar Ali's brilliance is been shown in every shot of the film. Gaman is a film of departure. Ghulam played by Farooq Sheikh a man from a village who tries to do better in life, tries to meet his end. He moves to the city of Mumbai with the help of his friend Lallulal Tewari played by Jalal Agha who's been working in the city for a quite long time. At first, Ghulam seems to have a very progressive journey to become a taxi driver, he feels hopeful. But eventually, all hope dies when he realizes that there's no way out of this rotten city.  There are so many factors in this film that are nothing less than genius. First of all, the acting. Everyone, from Farooq Sheikh to Smita Patil, a very young Nana Patekar to Jalal Agha, everyone was on point, giving their best to it.  ...

Lakadbaggha 2023 Movie Review and Revival

Lakadbaggha 2023  Anshuman Jha famously known for his role as the writer in the Mastram series comes back with a banger. A very fresh and unique fantasy crime ( although I didn't find much fantasy in it, but still).  When the first trailer of the movie came out, I was curious and quite interested too. A film about a Kolkata-based vigilante who fights for animal rights. What's not to like about it? Then it just vapourised from people's minds and honesty, mine too.  But recently it just popped into my head that there was going to be a film about a dog lover right? Then I went to Google Mastram and then to the name and work of Anshuman Jha and from there, I got the name of Lakadbaggha.  As I watched it, I felt like it was worth watching. Although the story felt quite flat. Hero with the inspiration of his dead father and villain with the trauma of his dead father. And a very, very good-looking heroine in between. The writing was pretty decent and...

Om-Dar-B-Dar 1988 Film Review

Om-Dar-B-Dar 1988 Film Review A film had to be as brilliant as Om Dar-B-Dar to bring me back from the melancholy and abyss to reviewing films again. And oh boy, what work it did.  One has to think beyond imagination to understand or even feel this film. One of the most brilliant films of Indian cinema is Om Dar-B-Dar directed by Kamal Swaroop whom I'd love to explore more shortly. When I came to know about this film, I had no idea that the Post-modern Indian cinema would have something like this in its sleeves. A film in surreal non-linear way like 'Barton Fink'  with Social and Political satire like 'Captain Fantastic' with its straight-cut dialogues, breaking the social norms in the most enjoyable way possible is a delight to watch.  I just feel like this film has too much to observe and too little recognition. As melodious as the name sounds, Om Dar-B-Dar is a surrealist masterpiece with a full-blown social & political satire. This film follows th...

Day & Night 2010 Movie Review and Revival

Day & Night (2010) I know I know that it's been a long since I reviewed a film. But if I had to make a comeback, it has to be with something special. And here it is.      Sometimes I wonder how can a short film be so beautiful that it can take away all the tiredness and numbness.  Day & Night directed by Teddy Newton has to be one of the most beautiful animated films I've ever seen.  Day & Night two strangers suddenly meet each other. They get nervous at first, they argue, they fight and eventually, they see all the beauty the opposite person has to offer.  A very good thing about this film is the way this film conveys a deep-rooted massage with such simplicity is just charming.  I won't say much about this film anymore except that one should not miss such a film.  To me, it's a 5/5 for sure.               ~ Subhodeep Chakraborty

The Bypass (2003) Short Film Review & Revival

The Bypass This is the ocean of sand and everyone's a criminal in it.  So as I came back home defeated from work, I was seeking an escape as I do every day from reality. I checked my watchlist and I couldn't find any. So I faced YouTube, the OG one. As I searched for Short films on YouTube, this film came to my vision. A film with Irrfan in it was enough to make me interested and it was a crime thriller. So I jumped into it and boy what a show it was.   The story starts with a newlywed couple, in their car going through the desert facing two bandits and then the story switches its center point quite often showing us that not everyone who seems to have kind intentions or morals is not made that way. A cop, a cook, a helpless woman, an old lady, a driver, and two bandits. Everyone gets their fair share of consequences.    Although the film is pretty short and doesn't have any dialogue the treatment of this film is just classic. Irrfan and Nawaz are bot...
